It can be aimed upwards for ambient lighting or downwards for table lighting. I like that it has 3 settings. One is with just the outer lights, one with the 4 inner lights or all of the lights at once.
Needs 4 AA batteries which are not included, but that's OK, Amazon has great deals on buying batteries in bulk so I had batteries on hand anyhow.
I've been using this every night for 3 weeks on the same batteries. LED's don't draw much current so hopefully the batteries will last a good long while.
